Warm-Up 2

Warm-Up 2 is all about complaining. 'The Hire Car from Hell' is all about really bad treatment when renting a car in the USA. The idea for this Warm-Up came from the wonderful film,"Trains and Planes and Automobiles", with Steve Martin and John Candy. The task is set up so that you don't have any other option than to write a well-composed letter to the company in the USA - and hope for the best. The sum of money involved is too small to make it worth your while starting a legal action (at least from this side of the Atlantic - it'd be different if you were living in the USA, where they have Small Claims Courts). There's also a lot of scope for 'he said-she said' situations (which is how they describe situations where one person says one thing, and the other person says something different in American English).

The task itself is quite limited: you only have to write FIVE sentences from the letter you'd write (i.e. NOT the entire letter). The point is to see whether you can calibrate your language, so that you express yourself firmly, but refrain from insults and gratuitous comments that will just result in your letter being filed in the trash can! Once again, there's a link to the Send-In Task which comes next.

You submit your Warm-Up Task 2 by copying your text into a comment. Remember to include FIVE sentences only - and to include your name in the submission.

By the way, if you don't know what the 'redeye' is, take a look at the first comment on this post.

44 comments:

  1. The 'redeye' is an inter- or transcontinental flight which involves you taking off at the end of the working day (in the time zone you're in), trying to sleep on a plane and arriving at the beginning of the working day (in the time zone you're going to). The problem is that your body's telling you that it's time to switch off and go to sleep, whilst everyone around you has a body telling them it's time to wake up and go to work! You're also crumpled, badly made-up (or unshaven) and generally grumpy!

  2. Here is my five sentences from my letter of complaint.

During my vacation i New York I rented a car from your airport desk, unfortunately I had a number of problems with the car, there was no washing fluid, the car was dirty, smelled bad and it broke down on the freeway. A tow trucker was able to fix the car but I had to pay him out of my own pocket. When I told the airport desk about my problems they made a promise to give me a 50% refund and pay my expenses for the tow truck. When I contacted them yesterday the staff denyed that the conversation had taken place and when i checked my account the full ammount had been debited. I sincerely hope that this is all a mistake and that someone at the Head Office will be able to sort this out since it is not acceptable in any way to treat custumers like this.

    The Hire Car from Hell!

“The state of the car I hired was unacceptable with litter, no washer fluid and a non working engine. This resulted in rescuing from a tow truck on the freeway this rainy day, which I had to pay for in cash myself. I was assured that the charges would be adjusted with a 50% discount and a refund of the tow truck costs ($50) when I returned the car at the airport but when I arrived the next day the desk was closed so I had to leave the keys with a note in the returns box.

To my astonishment no adjustments have been made to my account and now the airport office deny all knowledge of our conversation. I would like to request that your company investigate this matter and provide a compensation for my outlays and the inconveniences it caused.”

    The Hire Car from Hell!

Unfortunately, I rented a car which was out of washer fluid and broke down on the way; therefore I called a tow truck which helped to tag the car and connected with a man from Hell Company. I paid the tow truck $50 in cash and the man from Hell Company promised to refund money and give me a 50% discount of renting as compensate.
Your office was closed when I arrived at the agreed time; in that case, I wrote a note and left the key in the box, but there is no refund till now.
I called the airport office; they denied all the facts and suggested me to attach to the head office.
I would welcome your ideas in discussing solutions to this problem.

  5. Recently, I hired a car at one of your offices outside New York and to my disappointment I had a number of problems. For instance, the car was not clean inside, there was no washer fluid and the engine stopped while I was on the road so I got help from a tow truck driver. I informed the office of my inconveniences and they promised I would get back the 50 dollars I paid for the tow truck and that I would receive a 50 percent discount on the hire charge.

When I got to the office for returning the keys, there was no one there so I left a note at the office with a brief outline of what I had been through. When I noticed I had been charged for the full cost, I called the office which refused to acknowledge my case and told me to get in touch with you, why I am now hoping that we will reach a solution.

  6. The way your company is treating your customer is miserable! My hire car was very dirty, had no washer fluid and the engine stopped working after just a short drive. When I talked to your staff at the airport, they said I was going to be compensated, but your company took full price anyway. It doesn’t stop there, the employee at the airport was rude too, and therefore I write you this letter. I want my money back for the hire car from hell, and as you might suspect, I will not be your customer any more.

Last Sunday night I rented a car from the New York airport desk, unfortunately the car broke down on the freeway.

I called your company and after an hour they sent me a tow truck but I had to pay for 100$ by myself.

I thought it must be a mistake and I called your company, the help desk told me that I can use the receipt and get 100$ back in my credit card when I returning the car.

It has been one week since I came back from New York while nothing happens in my credit card, so I think the help desk must forget this.

Generally speaking the service is satisfactory except that the tow trunk fee is not return, could you please help to check that, thank you.

Recently I was in New York and rented a car from your airport desk. Unfortunately there were some inconveniences with the car, it was not clean inside, it was out of washer fluid and it broke down on the freeway. In order to get help I had to call a tow car and pay $50 in call-out charge.
I contacted your company and explained the situation and they assured me a compensation of 50 percent refund on the hire charge and that I would get my money back from the tow car expense. Somehow this promise has fallen into oblivion and I am still charged for the total rental amount and have not received any money.
I hope you understand my disappointment and that we could reach a solution to this unfortunate incident.

  9. The inconvenience of a filled ashtray and a half eaten pizza in the passenger seat met me once I got into the car, which broke down in the middle of the road.

The tow truck that came to my rescue took a charge of $50, which I was promised by your customer service department to be refunded, together with a 50% discount of the renting price.

My credit card has already been charged without any reduction of the original price, thus no discount has been given.

Therefore, I am now asking you to repay the amount of $50 together with half of the amount you have been charging my credit card, since this was the agreement between me and your agent at the local renting desk.

Below I provide you with my details you need to repay to my Swedish account.

  10. During my stay in New York City I rented a car from your airport desk, sadly I had a lot of problems with this car, therefore I write to you to get help to solve my problems. First of all your car was not cleaned before I got it, there were a half eaten pizza in it, the ash tray where full and it smelled badly. Sadly the car broke down on the highway and I had to call a tow truck to get help, this did coast me $50, which I had to pay from my own pocket. I immediately talked to the staff at the airport desk and they told me 50% refund, but the day after they did not seem to know anything about this. I hope that you could investigate this problem at your company and compensate me for my expenses and the discomfort I had, renting a car from your company.

  11. I am sorry to inform you that the services delivered by your company not are in level that can be expected by a car rental firm. The car was dirty, no washer fluid, the engine stopped and service from a tow truck, to a cost of $ 50, was needed to get the car start again. When I phoned you, 50% discount as a compensation for the inconvenience, as well as the $ 50 for tow truck service cost, was promised. When I came home to Sweden my credit card has been charged with the total cost and the $ 50 for two service cost.
I am convinced that this is inaccuracy that easily can be solved when we get in touch. Please call or mail me an answer on your proposal for solution.

  12. It is with regret that i must inform you that your airport office denied the commitment, which is made by the representative about paying back refund and a 50% discount as the compensate for me, is unacceptable in order to make a good company’s reputation in the competitive market. After paying the rent of the car on the airport, I was drove to a car park by courtesy bus and found the dirty car which was filled with the smelt of beer and sweat, and had half of a take-away pizza inside and no washer fluid. It is of utmost importance that the $50, paying by me for the tow truck driver to make the car working again, was promised to pay back when I returned the car. However, when I arrived at airport to take my “red-eye” back to Europe and return the car, the representative’s desk was deserted and hence I left the key and note into the returns box. I am looking forward to your ideas about solutions of my refund and compensation.

  13. I am sorry to have to inform you of this but there has been a mistake regarding to the charge for my hire car and a tow truck during my business trip.
The hire car, which was given to me, was very filthy inside and moreover it broke down in the middle of freeway while raining outside.
This situation resulted in the help of a tow truck, for which I had to pay 50 dollars in cash.
One of your company staff proposed to refund money for a tow truck and to give a 50% discount for a hire car but somehow the charge was debited for whole amount without any promised refunding or discount.
I hope your company would suggest some solutions about the matter such as transferring money back to my account or canceling the overpaid charge from my card.

  14. I hired a car at one of your rental desks at the airport last month because I had to go quickly through the state to attend a business meeting.

I can tell you it was the car from hell I received, with a smell of cigarette smoke that occurred when the car was warm and broken fuel cap which made it impossible to refuel the car without repairing the lid.

It has been difficult to get hold of your support, so I have been paying a great deal of money just to be placed in telephone queues that did not lead anywhere but to excuses and vague answers an promises of getting back to me with solutions.

Had it not been a fact that I was in a hurry to a business meeting, I had obviously left the car back immediately but the shortcomings was discovered and solved by me, and unfortunately not by you, during my trip due to the importance of me getting on time to the meeting.

I expect to hear from you this time and I expect an economical compensation for my costs for the repair of the fuel cap and a dry cleaning of my clothes.

  15. I cannot believe the state I found the car in when I picked it up.

The person I spoke from your customer service promised me that I would get a $50 refund for the tow truck expenses.

I will definitely not hire a car from you again if you do not refund me.

Do you not check the cars before you rent them out to the next person?

I called your company’s customer service and explained everything, and I left a note with the key when I returned it, and you have still done nothing about my refund.

  16. The car was badly smelt with sweat and beer, even, half eaten pizza was left by some one in car along with ashtrays full of ash that made the environment too bad to sit in.

Washer fluid was not available to cope with the splashes to windscreen in result of heavy rain.

While heading off to New York City, the engine of the car was stopped and the help of a tow truck had to be taken while paying the driver with $50 from own pocket

On timely intimation to the company, it was promised that 50% discount will be given along with $50 back as a compensation of the problems I had to face

On return, desk was deserted, I dropped the keys in return box with a note. But as I got the next credit card statement I am fully charged with the bill with no compensation. The airport office is now denying that any such conversation is in their knowledge and has directed me to write to you for the resolution of the problem

I have a couple of things that I would like to address concerning the very unsafe car I rented from you. To start with the car was filled with what I suppose was previous customers litter, in the glove compartment someone had been kind enough to leave a very mouldy sandwich which gave the air in the car a rather funny smell. Speaking of air condition, there wasn’t any, even though I specifically asked and paid extra for it. I had my old mother with me and she caught a cold from the cool air in the car. Furthermore the seatbelt in the driver seat was broken, which gave me a £ 200.00 fine when a policeman stopped us for a routine inspection.

  18. When I rent a car, I expect that it is clean and intact, unfortunately, that was not the case. The car was filthy, there was some pizza left, an overfilled ashtray, no washer fluid and then it broke down on the freeway.

After the car broke down on the freeway, I contacted the front desk and was promised to get a 50% refund of the car rental expenses and full repayment for the tow truck, which was 50 dollars.

Since you have not kept your promises, I would appreciate if you could contact me so that we can agree on how I can obtain my reimbursement.

I was advised that the $50 that I paid for the tow truck assistance would be reimbursed to me along with a 50% discount of the total payment for the hire car.

Upon my arrival back to the UK, I phoned your airport office to query the fact that I had not received the money due to me.

  20. I must say that I was very dissatisfied with the standard of the car, which had not been cleaned, the washer fluid was out, and as if this was not enough the car broke down on the highway.
I called the office at the airport and spoke to a very polite man, John, who promised that my expenses for the tow truck would be covered and that the company would compensate me with a 50% discount.
I was surprised to discover that you had charged me the full rate and that my expenses for the tow truck had not at all been covered.
I would appreciate if you contacted me as soon as possible to solve this misunderstanding that has occurred. I am sure we can find a solution without having to contact a third party.

As previously explained the interior of the car was not only in a terrible condition, but the car also lacked washer fluid and broke down on the freeway due to engine problems. In order to get the car restarted, it was necessary to call a tow truck for which I paid $50 in call-out charge. When I contacted your company I was assured that the charges would be adjusted by a refund of the $50 and a 50 % discount on the charge. However, as the matter has caused me both financial disadvantage and inconvenience, I would appreciate if your company could offer a solution within the near future. – Andrea Ahlberg

To make things worse, in my way towards New York City I also discovered that the washer fluid was empty, which was very dangerous while driving on the wet highway, just moments before the car’s engine suddenly broke down.

Fortunately a tow truck stopped right behind me and after consulting an employee from your company, Mr. Smith, I paid the tow truck driver a fee of 50 dollars in cash in order to put the car up and running again.
    ...
The next day I contacted Mr. Smith, again, for the matter and I was reassured that I would be refunded for the 50 dollar fee while getting a 50% discount on the initial rental fee as a compensation for the aforementioned inconveniences.

Thereafter you can imagine my surprise when I received my credit card statement portraying the full amount of the rental fee to be charged with no reimbursement following it.
    ...
Consequently I expect your company to contact me as soon as possible in order to solve this confusion and re-establish our relationship so that we can collaborate again in the future.

  27. The shape of the car was, by all means, not up to standard compared to what you debited my credit card, except for the hygienic factor in the car (left over pizza slices in the back seat, an over loaded ash tray and a stuffy smell of beer and sweat for example) the safety standard was, and still is, a very serious issue in this matter.

A car with no washer fluid can be a major safety risk in New York traffic, this problem combined with the engine stopping in rush hour traffic adds the risk factor.

I talked to your representative who promised compensation with a 50 % discount and a refund of the $50 call-out charge to the tow truck, in spite of this promise from your representative, my credit card have been debited full price and now your representate claim to have no knowledge about this converstaion and the story, therefore they have referred me to you, the head office in New York.

It is no more then fair, in both our favors, that your company keeps their promise and give me the promised 50 % discount and full refund of the $50 call-out charge, the tow truck driver can confirm the incident where your rental car crashed down in rush hour traffic due to the poor standard of the car.

I look forward to your reply, I expect the refund within 14 days to my credit card, then this issue does not have to become new to the public of New York.

I am very pleased to inform you the wonderful experiences I have had with your company, the car you rented out to me, and the very courteous bus driver who took me to the edge of the airport and just drove off upon seeing the car that I was supposed to use. The car was so dirty, the washers were out of fluid, and the car engine stopped on the freeway, luckily, a tow truck was able to fix the problem but I had to pay a call out charge of $50 which I was advised to do by one of your employees to whom I spoke with on the phone.

Now, when I talked to one of your employees after that horrible day, I was ASSURED that the charges would be adjusted when I returned the car; I will get my $50 back, and I would even receive a 50% discount on the hire charge to compensate me for the inconvenience. However, when I went to your office at the airport, there was no one at the desk, so, I instead left a note and the car key in the returns box.

When I received my statement of account, I was surprised that none of the promised compensation came true because your company has charged me the full amount; so, I do hope that you would look into this matter and provide me the compensation your company has promised me!

    Dear Mr. Smith,
On the 10th of September, I rented a hire car model Toyota at JKF Airport at the Terminal and unfortunately, your service has not performed well because of the very bad state of the car.

I am disappointed because I your rental car did not fulfill the standard you promised as lack of leftover garbage inside the car, no washer fluid, suddenly breakdown of the motor, also causing delays and extra expenses for a tow truck at 50 $. When I received my bank statement I was billed the whole amount and no sign of compensation I was promised.

To resolve the problem I would appreciate it if you could recharge my card credit the 50$ plus the 50 % discount I was promised of the rental car at your airport office due to the inconvenience. I have earlier enjoyed good service from your company and have recommended you to business associates several times. It would thus be unfortunate if we were unable to resolve this matter.

When I started driving toward New York, there were a lot of filthy spray kept splashing up on the windscreen due to rain but washer fluid was not available

The car engine stopped on freeway, I talked with a tow trucker to fix the car and I paid him $50 in cash from my own pocket. I contacted with the company, it was promised by the company that they refund me $50 which I paid to tow tracker and also give 50% discount as compensate for the inconvenience

After that when I reached at your company desk, annoyed, it was closed. I dropped the car keys in the return box with a note but when I received my new credit card statement, it was showing that you charged me full amount, no compensation. Now company is not accepting it so I am writing you letter. I hope you will resolve this matter very soon, I look forward hear from you soon. Thank You

  39. I write to you to complain about my terrible car rental at your company. When I got the car it was in horrible shape, not cleaned and not functioning at all. My car totally broke down at the highway on my first trip, so I did not have any car at all to use!! Back at the airport (date xx-xx-xx at 9 pm) no one was left at your company that I could talk to. I was in contact with you over the phone I was promised to get all my expenses covered ($70) and a 50% discount, I now suggest that you make the repayment to my account XXXXX-X.

  40. -I was devastated to find the car in such bad condition and due to the late hour and terrible weather I had no choice but to drive the car to NYC in it´s current state.

-When phoning your customer service number the following day I was promised a 50% refund on the rental fee plus full coverage for the $50 call-out-fee that I had to pay for the tow truck.

-No need to say I was not only surprised but also very disappointed and angry to see that the full rental amount had been debited from my credit card.

-I can not accept to pay full rental for this car due to what occured and I can neither accept to be liable for the $50 call-out-fee.

-I look forward to your prompt reply and to receive the compensation as promised within a week.

  41. The 20th of October 2010 I rented a car from your company and I regret to inform you that I did not get the service I expected from your employees. There were a number of problems with the experience, the car was unacceptably dirty with litter from the previous renter, there was no washer fluid left in the car and the car broke down on the highway.
All of the above would have been acceptable if I would have been compensated in an adequate way. According to an oral agreement I made with your employee it is quite clear that I would receive a 50 percent discount on the hire charge as well as a cover of my costs for the tow car who helped me when the car broke down.
I regret to inform you that I later realized that I had been debited the full amount and that I had not gotten any compensation for my costs for the tow car which is unacceptable and I hope that we will be able to come to an agreement within the next seven days.

  42. This letter is to complain about service I recently received from a car hair company at New York airport.

I rented a car from your company at New York airport, and expected a much higher level of service from your company but I am quite disappointed. From the moment I have taken the car seen many problems, first the car was very dirty with half eaten pizza, the ashtrays were full, and smelt of beer and sweat. When I headed off towards New York City tried the washers but there was no washer fluid, then the warning lights on the car came on and the engine stopped, and office representative made me to pay 50$ tow truck call-out charge. However, when I contacted the local office with a number of complaints, the representative assured and promised to pay back 50$ and 50% discount on the hire charge but there was no sign of the promised compensation as I can see my credit card statement.

I called on 2010-10-24 to find out how to deal with the problem, I had to explain my problem to several times because the person at another end did not seem to be listening and put me on hold for several minutes, and then returned to say he could not help me and asked me to write a letter to head office in New York.

I do not want us to spend much of our valuable time on this issue anymore, and I would expect return of promised compensation. I will happily provide you with the necessary paperwork.

I look forward to your immediate response to my complaint.

    Sincerely,
    Naveen G

  43. Due to the unfortunate experiences I had with my rental from your company on July 4th 2010, I am urged to write you since your local staff at JFK Airport deny all knowledge of the inconvenient incident.
I had made arrangements to rent a car from you in advance, although the car I met was in most terrible shape, hideously dirty and smelt of a full ashtray.

Since I arrived to JFK after hours, I had no other choice but to drive off, which went fine until the car broke down and I had to require assistance which cost me an extra 50 dollars, an amount your staff, by phone on the 5th of July, promised to refund along with a 50% discount adjustment on the car hire made to my credit card.

I sought to solve the issue before leaving U.S, but unfortunately your office was closed when I went to return the keys, so here we are now: I hope you understand the predicament and that you will see so that we can reach the promised solution by credits being made as soon as possible.

    Best regards

  44. Letter of complaint

    Dear Sir, 2010-10-31

I went to New York for a business trip and it was a very important meeting for me. When I hired a car from your company I realized that the car was terribly exhausted! The car was dirty and it had many mistakes as no washer fluid, the breaks was down, the engine was not working and then the car stopped at the freeway. In addition to this, I had to pay the tow truck $50 and when I explained this to the hire company they promised me to get back $50 and a discount of 50% for all the mistakes.

When I checked my account the hire company had debited all the amount. I mentioned this to the hire company and they denaied my complaining.

The risks which could occur for me in the first case was that I could die because of the breaks! The other thing was that I was late to my meeting! I don´t think I have to explain more than this.

All of these terrible experiences, I am sure that you definitely will make all your faults up in terms of providing me all the expenses back.

    Yours,

    Nil Yeter
